Scholarships

The main difference between Category A and Category B of the Chinese Government Scholarship lies in their application channels: Category A (Recommended through external agencies) Category A applications are generally processed through dispatching authorities in the applicant’s home country, Chinese embassies/consulates abroad, or international cooperation organizations. They are coordinated by overseas institutions rather than by universities in China. Category A has broader coverage, including undergraduate, master’s, PhD, and various non-degree programs.Applicants must first obtain a recommendation or nomination from their home country before requesting a pre-admission letter from a Chinese university. The application timeline varies by country but typically falls between November and February of the following year. Category B (Direct university application) Category B scholarships are administered directly by Chinese universities, and students submit their applications straight to their chosen institutions. This category is most common for international students applying for master’s or PhD programs. Typical eligibility requirements include: Master’s applicants: under age 35 PhD applicants: under age 40 Required language proficiency (HSK or English test) Applicants must complete their submission through the China Scholarship Council (CSC) online system and select their desired universities. Each university reviews applications independently, and evaluation periods vary, usually from November to the following spring. Some institutions may also provide additional Chinese language preparation support for students who do not yet meet the required language level. Funding Benefits (for both A & B Categories) Both categories generally offer similar financial support, including: Full or partial tuition waiver On-campus accommodation or accommodation subsidy Monthly stipend Comprehensive medical insurance Summary Category A relies on recommendations from home-country institutions, while Category B is based on a university’s direct selection process. However, the funding benefits are largely the same across both categories.
