Scholarships

The primary distinction between Category A and Category B Chinese Government Scholarships lies in their application channels. Category A scholarships are typically recommended through the sending agencies in the applicant's home country, Chinese embassies abroad, or international cooperation organizations, falling under the coordination of overseas institutions. Category B scholarships, however, are directly managed by Chinese universities for recruitment and evaluation, allowing students to apply directly to their target institutions. In terms of financial support, both categories are broadly similar, typically covering tuition waivers, on-campus housing or housing subsidies, monthly living stipends, and comprehensive medical insurance. The main differences lie in the target applicants and application procedures. Category A offers broader coverage, accepting applications from undergraduate, master's, doctoral, and various types of visiting students. However, the process requires first obtaining recommendation eligibility from the home country before securing a pre-admission offer from the target university. Application timelines vary by country, generally集中 from November of the previous year to February of the following year. Category B is more commonly used by international students applying for master's or doctoral programs. Master's applicants are typically required to be under 35 years old, while doctoral applicants must be under 40, and both must meet the corresponding language proficiency requirements. Students must submit materials and select universities through the China Scholarship Council (CSC) system. Review cycles vary by institution, typically occurring between November and the following spring. Some universities also offer additional Chinese language study funding for students who do not meet the language requirements. Overall, Category A relies more heavily on external recommendation channels from the home country, while Category B involves university-based independent selection. However, the funding standards for both categories are essentially the same.
